How to Sample Fragrances Without Wasting Money
A practical guide to sampling fragrances before committing — decants, discovery sets, and avoiding common buyer mistakes.
Buying full-bottle blind is the most expensive mistake in fragrance. Sampling first turns a $200 risk into a $5 decision.
Start with reputable decant sources. Established decant retailers fill from sealed bottles; verify reviews and avoid suspiciously cheap niche samples — counterfeits are common.
Test on skin, not paper. Paper strips show top notes only. Real evaluation requires 6–12 hours on your own skin in multiple contexts: morning commute, indoors at work, evening out.
Wear once at minimum, twice ideally. First wears are clouded by novelty. The second wear reveals whether it's actually for you.
Track what you smell, in writing, within an hour. Memory is unreliable; notes are not.
Reformulations matter. A glowing review from 2014 may not describe what's in the bottle today. Check release year and reviewer date.
